Built in 1784 as the home of the Portsea Beneficial Society and the Beneficial School, our Grade II* listed building remained a place of education until 1962 and is recognised as one of the first purpose built free schools in the UK and by introducing a girls’ school in 1837, it became one of the first co-educational schools in the country. 

Now, as Groundlings Theatre we produce 70% - 80% of our yearly program in-house with a mixture of both professional and amateur shows that both entertains the community and highlight its grassroots talent.

Join us as we attempt to make contact with ghostly souls who still reside at this former school. Children are often heard. Hear “little George” on the staircase or Emily in the classroom. Children laughing is often heard upstairs

Poltergeist activity is not uncommon as objects are moved and even vanish only to turn up later in a different part of the theatre

One particular room has the distinct smell of lavender whilst cold spots and dark shadows are encountered throughout

Want to sleep in a haunted prison? Join us! Twelve hours of ghost hunting! We are delighted to be hosting at the magnificent Shepton Mallet Prison. A category C lifer prison that opened in 1625!

The kitchen and bedrooms star in the new Downton movie! Join us ghost hunting at Cogges Manor Farm. We are currently taking bookings and we are delighted to bring a new venue to our events calendar - Cogges Manor Farm. Saturday 16th March.
